Want to know what I did on Sunday morning?
I ran my first half marathon.
It took me 2 hours and 36 minutes to finish. I’ve been told that
for someone who only started running three months ago and trained with a 2:40
run/walk group, it’s not bad.
That’s code for, “2:36 is way below average and women twice
your age can kick your ass.”
I don’t really know how to explain how I feel about running.
It makes me very happy but it also leaves me a little frustrated.
I don’t get tired while running, but I can’t go fast either.
It’s weird. It happened at the triathlon too. My legs just cannot go fast but
when I finish, I still have the energy to run a few more miles.
I’ve tried to do speed work and strength training at the gym.
Even then, my average pace just isn’t going down.
I’m going to try training differently for the Dallas half next month and see if
anything changes. I plan to run/walk less and run more. I also want to work on
core and upper body strength. And I plan to eat more carbs.
Or I’ll just give Carnivore my bib and beg him to run on my
behalf.
If nothing, I'll at least get a blog post out of it.

Congrats! That's an awesome time and more importantly - you did it!! Make sure you stretch/foam roll and recover after as well :)
ReplyDeleteThanks Sig. Don't know about the awesome time but those endorphins kept me quite happy all day. I went for a slow recovery run today and have a visit with the chiropractor lined up. So I'm hoping to bounce back quickly. Again, CONGRATULATIONS!
DeleteCongrats, G! Whether you ran it in 2 hours or 5, who cares...YOU RAN A FREAKIN' HALF MARATHON! Not many people can say that so I would bask in the glory for as long as you can! Love that bit about "at least I'll get a blog post out of it"...so true. And of course, you'll also get another excuse to load up on the carbs :)!
ReplyDeleteYou're too kind. I was happy about it all day yesterday and then this morning I realized that I was an hour slower than one of my friends. That humbled me a little bit, no a lot.
DeleteHey!
ReplyDeleteI'm new to your blog!
Wanted to say CONGRATS on your 1/2. Be VERY proud, it's your first one!
I guess it depends on your overall goals for running. I think everyone would like to be faster, but for me, I'd love to build and increase my stamina more than speed.
Keep at it, you'll get there!
Hi Amira. Thanks for visiting and for the words of advice. I plan to train differently for the next race so I'm hoping I inch a little bit closer towards my eventual goal time.
DeleteIn my books you are THE winner.
ReplyDeleteAnd my HERO(INE!) :P

Haha and that's why you're a great friend.
Deletefirst of all congrats on the run. i may have seen you too actually that day. I am so glad to stumble into you and actually know someone on the blogging world from Dallas. How are you liking D-Town?
ReplyDeleteThanks Dixya and congratulations too you too. It was a hilly course but we managed to finish in one piece! I like Dallas a lot so far. I especially like the weather! So glad to have found your blog. Now I know a Dallas blogger!
DeleteI am glad to come across you too :)
DeleteCongrats my friend! A marathon is such a huge accomplishment...I can't even imagine how great you must feel about it.
ReplyDeleteThanks Ameena. It felt great to finish although I wish I'd gone a bit faster.
DeleteWow Gayatri, such a pleasent surprize to see you fulfilling one of your New Year resolutions before the arrival of New Year:) Great going and your new profile pic is lovely! Visiting your blog after a very long break!
ReplyDeleteGo G!!! You are flying!!!! So proud of you :)
ReplyDeleteWay to Go G !! I could help you on the carbs dept. LOL!
ReplyDeleteCongrats Gayatri.. Running a half marathon is a feat in itself. And btw you write really well..:)
ReplyDeleteCongrats on this! Sorry, been a bit late to wish you. You both have inspired me to take to walking at least if not running, and that's been really helpful. :)
ReplyDeleteI walk 45-50 Kms a week but I don't feel that's going to be enough...should take part in the next Mumbai half marathon most probably! Any advice?
DeleteCongratulations girl! that's quite a feat! It's very inspiring, because I'm so out of shape. I can't even run up the stairs without catching my breath! Nice blog btw, would you like to follow each other?

Congrats! I ran my first half marathon on Sunday. 6 months ago I couldn't run a mile. While training for my half, the longest distance I ran was 5miles. Give the Lonestar a chance! I live about 3 hrs from you and TRUST ME, Dallas is a gem compared to my tiny podunk town.
